Schaar’s Bluff Gathering Center is referred to as a “living” building. The “living” building idea is to create the foundation for a sustainable future in the fabric of our communities.

This building is designed to respond to the challenges of the seasonal changes in the weather.   It ranks within the top 1% of all sustainable structures, as described by the U.S. Green Building Council registered buildings.

The structure generates its own power with a 90 foot wind turbine. The roof captures rainwater that sustains the vegetation that provides food for the support of the wildlife animal habitat.  Additionally the rainwater also provides water for the bathrooms.

One energy saving feature is the eyebrow shading over the windows which blocks direct summer sun while permitting solar heat from the winter sun.   The ventilating windows work with and are linked to the HVAC system to allow breezes to cool or heat the building throughout the year.  These venting windows are systematically designed to be located in high and low positions to automatically open and close based on heating and cooling requirements.
